  • ASMP, in cooperation with PACA and CEPIC, has reached out to Microsoft to raise concerns related to the Bing Image Widget. We believe that the "Widget" is deceptive and misleading, and has the potential to lead users to believe that any image found is available for free use without the need for a license. Getty Images has filed an injunction against Microsoft related to the Bing Image Widget and ASMP supports this action. ASMP, as an association, cannot file copyright infringement actions due to the fact that we are not rights holders. As an alternative, ASMP has asked for a meeting with Microsoft. We will report on further developments. In the meantime, you can read more here
  • ASMP and a group of photographers, visual artists and affiliated associations have reached a settlement with Google in a lawsuit over copyrighted material in Google Books. The agreement ends four years of litigation over the inclusion of visual works in Google Books. The parties are pleased to have reached a settlement that benefits everyone and includes funding for the PLUS Coalition, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping rights holders and users communicate clearly and efficiently about rights in works. Read the Press Release.
  • We have heard about a number of recent scams targeting photographers. If your contact information out there on the web - as it probably is if you're marketing yourself and your business - you can expect to receive scam emails now and then. Some of them are obviously bogus. But some of them are clever imitations of emails that a photographer might want to receive, and are therefore particularly dangerous. Read more about these scams here.

Tuesday, October 21
