ASMP Referendum Process Begins

After a comprehensive review of ASMP's policies, governance and membership categories, the Board has outlined a number of changes needed to bring the Society's constitution and bylaws up-to-date. These changes center on three areas: clarifying and modernizing membership definitions; creating a smaller and more efficient Board; and bringing the constitution up-to-date and in line with current practices. The process of presenting a Referendum which includes these items has begun and the changes will be considered by ASMP's voting members in the coming weeks. A Referendum Q&A webinar is being held October 15th at 1 pm for all Members. You can register here. According to ASMP President Ed McDonald, "These changes will help us build a stronger, better ASMP as we go forward." ASMP Membership Chair Jenna Close said, "We believe that the changes will enable ASMP to be more responsive in serving our members today and in the future." Members can read about the proposed changes here.

  • Facebook announced new Terms of Use to allow the company to sell virtually anything that is uploaded to the service, including all your photos, your identity and your data. Facebook also explicitly removed the privacy protection from the commercialization rights. This means that any photos uploaded to Facebook may be sold, distributed or otherwise commercialized with no compensation to the photographer. These new Terms were protested by a number of groups and professional organizations, including ASMP, and implementation has so far been delayed. ASMP has provided a Q & A on the subject here. We urge you to provide feedback to Facebook here. ASMP will continue to work to modify the terms of use to be more favorable to photographers.
  • ASMP has joined The American Civil Liberties Union, National Press Photographers Association and others are spearheading an advocacy campaign to push back against the nationwide "Suspicious Activity Reporting Initiative," a federal law enforcement collaboration that results in the gathering of information related to "suspicious activity," so broadly defined that it includes constitutionally protected activities such as photography and note-taking. A press conference will be held at 10:30 am on September 18 in San Francisco in front of the Federal Building at 450 Golden Gate.
