Best of ASMP 2012 Announced

Choosing twenty finalists from more than 150 projects submitted for the eighth annual Best of ASMP was a challenging task. The quality of work was overwhelmingly strong, and this year a record number of the submitted projects received a rating of four or above in a scale of one to five. Submissions came in from most of ASMP's 39 chapters, along with several strong international candidates. In 2012, Best of ASMP finalists are all over the map, with image makers hailing from 12 different chapters in addition to international finalists from Mexico and Japan. Sincere thanks to everyone who responded to this year's call for projects and a hearty congratulations to the 20 finalists: Jenn Ackerman & Tim Gruber, Glen Allison, Mikki Ansin, Michael Casey, Charles O. Cecil, Michael DeYoung, Amy C. Elliott, Kelly Gorham, Robert Hart, John Haynes, Hector Armando Herrera, Allen Jones, Carey Kirkella, Clark James Mishler, Ian Spanier, Ashok Sinha, Go Takayama, Jim Wark, Roberto Westbrook and Jimmy Williams.

You can view the Best of edition of the Bulletin on line here and read interviews with the finalists here.

  • Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, agreed to buy majority ownership of Getty Images from another private equity investor, Hellman & Friedman, in a deal that values the company at $3.3 billion. Read the article here.
  • ASMP has been closely monitoring the policies and behaviors by law enforcement officials toward photographers in various US cities. This week the Los Angeles Police Commission approved controversial new guidelines under which LAPD officers can document "suspicious behavior," including taking photographs or videotaping, which they believe could be linked to terrorism. Special Order 1 gives officers the authority to write reports on people whose actions might not break any laws, and ASMP is concerned about how this order will impact First Amendment rights of imaging professionals.

ASMP is offering 3 programs at the Photo Plus Expo:

  • Fri, Oct 26, 2012 - 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM
