Referendum Voting Has Begun

During the next month, General Members will be voting on changes that ensure that ASMP remains effective and relevant in our rapidly changing profession. ASMP is, by amending its constitution and by-laws, keeping up with the way photography professionals work today, while maintaining our well-earned reputation for quality. As a member, you are assured that these changes will allow us to go forward in lock step with the dynamics of our industry and your needs as a working photographer. We urge you to learn about these changes, to be engaged and to discuss them as we move forward in defining where we are headed as an organization. PPE Coming Up Next Week!

ASMP will be in New York City next week at the Javits Center for all the Photo Plus Expo activities beginning Wednesday the 23rd.

  • ASMP's annual member meeting is October 23rd from 3 pm - 5 pm with a presentation by Ben Lowy on Building an Innovative Career. Come join the fun! The first 100 will get a free pass to an ASMP seminar at PPE, and attendees are invited to a PDN Press Event immediately following the ASMP meeting.

  • If you're attending PPE, we'll be at the ASMP booth (#1173) during conference hours from the 24th to the 26th. Please stop by and say hello! As in past years, we will offer free consultations for members only.

Dorothea Lange/Paul Taylor Prize Awarded

The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University has awarded the twenty-first Dorothea Lange/Paul Taylor Prize to photographer and writer Jen Kinney . ASMP is Sustaining Sponsor of the Prize. The award is given to encourage collaboration in documentary work in the tradition of acclaimed photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. Jen graduated in 2012 from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in photography and imaging. Her winning project, “City Under One Roof,” is about Whittier, Alaska’s shared spaces. YPA/ASMP Awardee Announced

Gianna Izzolo, a freshman at the Art Institute of Chicago, is the recipient of the 2013-14 Young Photographers Alliance/ASMP Scholarship award. ASMP is the Major Founding Sponsor of YPA and has been a supporter since the organization's inception in 2009. To foster social and environmental responsibility in the photographers of tomorrow, scholarship recipients are selected not only for their ability and their need, but also for their demonstrated commitment to giving back to the larger community through their work. Image 13 Winners Named

Image13, an international photo contest run by ASMP's New York chapter, has announced its 2013 winners. The competition was open to professional, serious amateur and student photographers. This competition has two categories, Professional and Student, and in each category a first, second and third place prize is awarded. The professional category winners are Gena Nero, Ole Marius Joergensen and Julie Grace Immink. Student category winners are Bridget Horgan Bell, Valerie Kasinski and Tanner Morris. There are also Judge's Choice and Honorable Mention winners in both categories. Congratulations to all! See all the winners and their work here.

  • Peter Krogh, ASMP Digital Committee Chair, will moderate an in-depth discussion on Practicing Safe Social Media at Photo Plus Expo, Oct. 24th 4-6 pm. Peter has been instrumental in monitoring and reporting on the Terms of Service for social media distributors of images. He and attorney Ross Buntrock, one of the program's panelists, recently issued The Instagram Papers , a report which discusses and analyzes Instagram's Terms of Use, including the granting of perpetual use licenses without any right of termination. Photography director for Huffington Post/AOL Anna Dickson, and ASMP past president Richard Kelly will also be panelists for the conversation about this important advocacy issue.

The media landscape has moved far beyond the simple convergence of the printed page with digital platforms. With smart phones, tablets and screens on literally every surface, the opportunities to distribute professionally produced imagery have exploded. Joe Squillante has two solo exhibits, A Closer Look: The Hudson River opened at the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries on October 12th. This show is large with almost 50 photographs. A second solo exhibit The Hudson River: An Inspiration is at Red Filter Gallery, Lambertville, NJ through November 3rd. On exhibit there is a collection of prints from Joe's classic black & white portfolio. In addition, Scenic Hudson's yearlong group exhibit On Time and Place: Celebrating Scenic Hudson's First 50 Years will culminate at Grand Central Terminal on October 25.

Shannon Fagan was one of 5 live speakers on the theme of "convergence", specifically the business start of his production unit for photography in Beijing and working in China. TEDxBiMBA is the first official TEDx event held in BiMBA (Beijing International MBA), PKU.

Susan May Tell's photographs are included in ART CART, curated by Pamela Tinnen and Allison Faye, at New York University's Stovall Gallery in the Kimmel Center through October 20th. On October 1st she was a panelist, with artists who work in other media, about living an artist's life.

Nearly a year ago, cancer stopped ASMP Education Director Susan Carr from fulfilling her greatest dream - the publication of a book documenting her "home project" formally known as Intimate Histories: Details of American Homes. The deadline has been extended and friends of Susan Carr are taking pre-orders until October 26th to raise the money necessary to produce the book posthumously. John Goodwin, civil rights, anti-Vietnam and United Methodist photographer will receive Ottawa University's Outstanding Achievement Award on October 24 during the University's Alumni Awards banquet in the Mowbray Union, 1001 S. Cedar Street, Ottawa, Kansas.


ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik just returned from meetings in London with BAPLA (British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies) as well as other associations regarding PLUS (Picture Licensing Universal System). He also attended an ICOMP (Initiative for a Competitive Marketplace) meeting in Brussels.

First Vice President Gail Mooney represented ASMP at the W. Eugene Smith Grant Ceremony in New York City on October 16. ASMP is a sponsor.

President Ed McDonald and Gail Mooney were at the Syracuse University Fall Workshop. Gail gave a presentation and Ed gave ASMP merit memberships to students from the S.I. Newhouse School there.

Member Colleen Wainwright will give the Keynote Address at the PACA 2013 Conference in NYC. Peter Krogh, ASMP Digital Standards and Practice Chair, will speak on "Social Media Cautions and Opportunities" on Monday, October 21st.

AI's & AP's Big Talk Events

Two events celebrating the winners in this year's American Photography 29 and American Illustration 32 annuals, the Latin American Fotografía and Ilustración 2 and the International Motion Art Awards 2 competitions are coming up. The BIG TALK symposium is on Wednesday, November 6th and The Party on Thursday, November 7th.
The symposium brings the AP29 and AI32 jurors, designers and special guests together for a series of panel discussions and presents the winners in the Latin American competition and a screening of the Motion Art winning projects. The Party brings the creative community together to celebrate the winners in AP29, AI32, Latin American and the Motion Art competitions. Dubai International Photography Award Invites Entries

The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) is an international photography award established in 2011 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai. Currently in its third season of competition titled “Creating the Future”, HIPA is the richest photography award in the world with a Grand Prize of $120,000 and an overall prize pool of $389,000.
