ASMP Referendum Passes!

All six questions on the Referendum passed with over 900 members casting ballots. Here are the questions and the percentages of YES votes for each.

  • Question 1- Definition of "Professional Member" 72%
  • Question 2 - Maintain a Governing Policies Manual 92%
  • Question 3 - Board of Directors to have 12 members 76%
  • Question 4 - Electronic balloting 97%
  • Question 5 - Four Board officers 76%
  • Question 6 - Annual financial audit 95%

These changes ensure that ASMP remains effective and relevant in our rapidly changing profession by keeping up with the way photography professionals work today, while maintaining our well-earned reputation for quality. As a member, you are assured that these changes will allow us to go forward in lock step with the dynamics of our industry and your needs as a working photographer. According to ASMP President Ed McDonald, "We are pleased with the results of the Referendum voting and it is now time now to roll up our sleeves and put these new initiatives to work for the good of the Society." Deeper Perspective Award Presented by ASMP

Ebrahim Noroozi was presented by ASMP with a prize of $5000 and a Lucie statue for the International Photographer of the Year - Deeper Perspective Award. Ebrahim began working as a professional photographer in 2004, with Fars News Agency. His photographs have appeared nationally and internationally, in such publications as The New York Times, Time, The Washington Post , and have been distributed by Agence France-Presse, the Associated Press, Reuters, United Press International, and the European Press Photo Agency. Noroozi has worked in India, Afghanistan, and Iran, and has worked as head of the photo department for the Iran Daily, as well as for Alvefaghnewspaper, Iran Sport, the Iran Photo Agency, Jamejam newspaper, and Jamejam online. He has won seven awards in Iranian photo contests, and a gold medal from Asahinewspaper. Noroozi has sat on the juries of several Iranian photo contests. See more about the awards here.


In the past month, ASMP has been involved in a number of important advocacy issues:

  • ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik worked with PLUS (Picture Licensing Universal System) President & CEO Jeff Sedlik to promote the PLUS standards and registry to representatives from BAPLA (British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies). ASMP is a Charter Sustaining Member of PLUS and a major supporter. To find out more about PLUS, go here.

  • Mopsik also attended an ICOMP (Initiative for a Competitive Online Marketplace) meeting at which professionals from a number of disciplines gathered to discuss the key importance and complexity of the internet ecosystem that is the online search market. You can learn more about ICOMP here.

  • Representatives from APA (American Photographic Artists) and ASMP attended the IFFRO (International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations) World Congress to explore the possibility of creating a reproduction rights organization for individual rightsholders in the U.S. They met with RROs from Europe, Scandinavia and Australia.   • At the PACA (Digital Media Licensing Association) Annual Conference and during PPE (Photo Plus Expo) in October, ASMP's Peter Krogh reported on and led a panel discussing current Terms of Use in social media, such as Instagram, and the problems they pose for professional photographers. Jim Havey and Havey Productions had a busy summer. In addition to numerous photography projects, two of their historical documentary films won Heartland Emmys. Broomfield: Spirit of the American Dream was awarded an Emmy in the Politics & Government category. Centennial Statehouse: Colorado's Greatest Treasure joined the ranks of Emmy in the Best Historical Documentary category.

Lynn Saville‘s "Vacancy" photographs were featured on pp. 6-7 of the Review section of the 11/3/13 Sunday edition of The New York Times. An expanded feature appears online here.

Rob Grimm hosted a 3 day Creative Live event with his studio/project manager, Gary Martin, on How to Be a Commercial Photographer 11/7 through 11/9. The event included information on how to set a budget, advertise your brand, and build your portfolio and client base. The event is available here.

Mark Maio's image, "20/20", was chosen to be included in the International Images for Science Exhibition 2013 organized by the Royal Photographic Society. The exhibition is scheduled to tour the UK throughout the year (next stop Royal Albert Hall) as well as a companion exhibition touring Italy during 2013/2014. John Goodwin has been honored in three ways this year: he gave the first in a series of programs for ASMP's NJ chapter on the work of Life Members; his college, Ottawa University in Kansas presented him with a Distinguished Alumni award; and United Methodist Communications has produced a short video about John and his life in photography.

Logan Mock-Bunting was one of seven awardees in the 2013 NPPA Short Grants Competition. The grants are awarded to support photojournalists who are creating compelling picture stories in their communities, and they are designed for funding projects small enough in scale that the bulk of the work can be accomplished in two weeks or less. Leif Skoogfors' work is included in "The Iconic Image", an exhibition by photographers of the Ochberg Society that opened November 1st at the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. The Ochberg Society is a global network of journalists who advance the compassionate and ethical coverage of trauma, conflict and social injustice. More info here.

Mike Crews was presented with the 8th Annual Black & White Spider Awards Honorable Mention in the category of Abstract. Last month's live online ceremony webcast was attended by photography fans in 75 countries.

In Memoriam: Jay Bennet Leviton, age 90, died on November 1, 2013. A groundbreaking Atlanta freelance professional photographer, his career spanned the 1950's through the early 21st century and involved editorial and industrial assignments. He will be missed in the Atlanta photographic community.

Stipple Announces Two New Products

Image tagging startup Stipple has announced two new products - Stipple Search, which allows anyone to identify the owner of an image, and Stipple Mobile, a smartphone photo app. Stipple's technology identifies images and adds tags that can point to related content. Oasis Photocontest 2013 Open

Registration is now open for the International Nature Photography Oasis Photocontest 2013, organized and promoted by Oasis magazine and Italian Association Nature Tourism. The overall winner will be awarded a cash prize and the prestigious trophy Oasis Photocontest, a work in bronze by the sculptor Michele Vitaloni. The deadline for submissions is December 25th. The best photographs will be included in the prestigious catalog of Oasis Photocontest and will be part of the exhibition tour 2014.
