McDonald Receives IPC Leadership Award

Ed McDonald, past President of ASMP, was honored on May 15th at the United Nations in New York with the 2014 International Photographic Council (IPC) Leadership Award. The ASMP Board of Directors chose Ed for this honor. Ed said, "I am both humbled and honored by this recognition. In the 16+ years that I have served for ASMP, the work accomplished has been made easy and enjoyable by the many who surrounded me with their tireless efforts, and the true rewards have been the lifelong friendships that I have made along the way." ASMP exhibits at the 2014 AIA Convention

The ASMP Architecture Specialty Group, the leading forum for architectural photographers around the world, will exhibit member images addressing the theme Change: Culture | Community | Commitment on the floor of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2014 convention, the largest gathering of architects and design professionals in the United States, from June 26th to 28th in Chicago.   • Effective May 1st, the Copyright Office increased the application fees for registration of copyright.
    • Applications filed online (via the eCO system) went from $35 up to $55. This includes both single images and group registration of unpublished images.
    • Paper applications went from $65 up to $85.
    There are a number of other fees for different types of registrations, renewals and certifications. The complete list is published here.

  • Video Now, funded by The Tow Center for Digital Journalism, visited newsrooms across the United States to interview and observe reporters and editors producing video journalism. Video has become an important editorial tool, as well as a potentially large revenue source for newsrooms. But there seemed to be no consensus on how to produce news videos or how to profit from them. Learn more about the report findings here.

MSP Chapter Gets Rave Reviews

The ASMP Minneapolis/St. Paul Chapter recently held its first ever commercial photography portfolio review event, Review 612. Over thirty commercial creatives from Minneapolis, Chicago and Madison looked at portfolios at the Graves 601 Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. The event was open to members and non-members. Howard Chapnick Grant Now Open for Entries

The $5000 grant, sponsored in part by ASMP, was established in 1996 by the Smith Fund and friends of Howard Chapnick to honor his memory as the head of the Black Star photo agency, and to encourage and support leadership in fields ancillary to photojournalism, such as editing, research, education and management. The grant may also be used to further education or research initiatives, as well as long-term sabbatical projects or internships. The deadline to apply is July 15th. To learn more, go here.

2014 Smith Grant Accepting Applications

The 2014 W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography is open for entries. This grant is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith's concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist. The $30,000 grant is one of the largest grants for photojournalism in the world. Entries are due by May 31 and those interested in applying for the grant can learn more by visiting

Apply to the Eddie Adams Workshop

The Eddie Adams Workshop is an intense four-day gathering of the top photography professionals, along with 100 carefully selected students and professionals with less than 3 years of experience. The photography workshop is tuition-free, and the 100 attendees are chosen based on the merit of their portfolios. Applications are due by May 31 for the October workshop. Learn more here.
