Image 14 Call for Entries

image-14 Image 14 is the 12th year of the ASMP NY Image Contest, a juried photo competition and exhibition. Each year, industry leaders and influencers come together on behalf of ASMP's New York Chapter to judge what they consider to be the finest in photography from the past year. The contest is open to submissions in two categories: Student & Professional, and there are multiple winners in each category. All images submitted must be created after January 1st 2013 and contest winners in each category will be exhibited in a Gallery show in New York in 2014. Deadline for submissions is May 1st and ASMP Members get a substantial discount. Get all the details here.

ON YOUR SIDE
  • ASMP issued a statement concerning the recent announcement that Getty Images is opening 35 million images to online publishers to use free of charge. Getty acknowledges that many of its pictures are already being copied anyway, so the company is allowing "non-commercial" users (such as bloggers and tweeters) to embed its images with a code. When the image appears, it will include a Getty photo credit and will be linked to Getty's website, where viewers can have the opportunity to license the photo. Read ASMP's statement here. ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik was also quoted in Bloomberg Businessweek. You can read the article here.

  • ASMP General Counsel Victor Perlman was quoted in a New York Times article entitled Photographers Band Together to Protect Work in 'Fair Use' Cases. ASMP submitted a Statement for use by the U.S. House of Representatives' Hearing on the Scope of Fair Use last month. You can read the NYT article here.

  • ASMP has submitted comments to the US Copyright Office on its Strategic Plan for the Recordation of Documents. General Counsel Perlman states, "We greatly appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the Copyright Office's process of building a system in and for the 21st century --- one that can take advantage of all of the benefits that a truly modern digital document recordation system can provide to all of its stakeholders, including both owners and users of copyrighted works." Read ASMP's submission here.

  • Good news for photographer Raphael Pirker. In 2011, Pirker, a skilled hobbyist and photographer, flew his Zephyr II craft over the University of Virginia campus and recorded photos and videos, which he sold to the university. In 2012, the FAA fined him $10,000, citing a number of violations including operating the aircraft in a reckless manner. Pirker and his attorney, Brendan Schulman, filed a motion with the NTSB to dismiss the penalty, questioning the FAA's authority to legally regulate drone technology. In a ruling Thursday, the NTSB granted their request to dismiss the fine. Read the decision here. The FAA has said it will appeal.
