ON YOUR SIDE

  • ASMP and Professional Photographers of America (PPA) have jointly submitted comments to the Copyright Office in response to the Register's Notice of Inquiry regarding fees for copyright registration. The comments state that both organizations believe that registration fees should be reduced for simple registrations of single works where there is a single applicant and that applicant is the sole author and sole copyright owner of the work; that the fee reduction should apply whether the registration is submitted online or in hard copy, at least until such time as all registrations may be completed online; and that the Copyright Office should explore the possibility of creating fixed-fee accounts for professional photographers who submit applications online through an automated function of their digital asset management programs. To see the filing, go here.

  • The December ASMP News reported that photographers are getting sued in the state of California for the late payment of wages. The problem continues, and Scott Taylor, of Taylor and Taylor Associates, an ASMP preferred insurance provider, told us recently, "I just had another photographer get caught in the law and they are facing a huge penalty. Most of the people getting caught up in the law are from out of state. The penalty is steep for an unintentional infraction." So beware — and learn more here.
