FAP Promotion
FAP ASMP's Find a Photographer is currently being promoted once again in an email campaign reaching thousands of art buyers across the country. According to Shawn Henry, ASMP Board Member and chair of the FAP Committee, "I urge members to take advantage of all that FAP offers by uploading images in our new, larger format, as well as linking video clips. By doing this, your work becomes more attractive to potential buyers – and you are helping to make FAP an even better resource." Remember, ASMP's additional specialty portfolios are only $20 per portfolio.

Corbis Registration
ASMP is preparing a legal brief in the Corbis case, in which US District Court for the Southern District of New York found that the methodology of how Corbis has been registering the copyrights to images and their database is flawed, and that the registration of images on behalf of photographers under its contract are invalid. The defendants in the case are Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company and R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company. In the Amicus Curiae brief, ASMP will urge the Court to validate Corbis' registration actions in light of the unfair impact on a large number of photographers if these registrations are ruled invalid. In a related international story, the French photojournalism agency bought by Corbis several years ago, Corbis Sygma, has declared bankruptcy in response to a court judgment that found the agency liable for lost images of a photographer. More information on this case is available on Randy Taylor's blog here. According to ASMP Executive Director Gene Mopsik, "As a rule, ASMP emphatically recommends that photographers should register their images, as individual rightsholders, prior to publication." ASMP continues to offer free workshops around the country on Copyright Registration. More information on workshops

  • ASMP has joined other photography trade organizations in opposing proposed amendments by the New York City Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting which, if approved, would add a fee of $300 to all permit applications. By unfairly grouping still photography in the same category as the film industry, ASMP believes the city's proposed fee would place an undue burden on photographers working in the city. Executive Director Gene Mopsik read the statement of opposition on behalf of ASMP, APA (American Photographic Artists), EP (Editorial Photographers) and NPPA (National Press Photographers Association) at a public hearing held on June 3rd.
