  • ASMP Digital Standards & Practices Chair Peter Krogh has been concerned about the Instagram Terms and Conditions because they appear to allow nearly unlimited use of images in perpetuity along with full indemnification of the company. According to Krogh, "Few people understand the ramifications of this imbalanced agreement and it is likely to become a standard for other providers on the internet." He urges members to be aware of this and to give careful consideration to the material they post on the site. You can read his blog on the subject here . ASMP and Krogh are working on a deeper analysis of the issues and have also been talking with industry associates. More information will be coming soon on this important topic.
  • ASMP's recent statement of concern about Condé Nast's New Exposure Photography Competition presented by Bottega Veneta generated a lot of buzz - and Condé Nast took notice. Condé Nast emailed ASMP - "We believe this (contest) is truly an extraordinary opportunity for emerging photographers, and we would like to have an opportunity to discuss this with you as soon as possible." ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik replied, "I do not doubt that this competition may be good on some level for an emerging photographer; however I cannot see how the acquisition of unlimited use, perpetual licenses to all contributions is in the best interests of photographers or necessary for the conduct and promotion of the competition. Additionally, even after award compensation, the taking of the copyright to the award winning work is contrary to the spirit of the competition." Mopsik and a representative from Condé Nast have yet to connect for a phone conversation.

There are a number of ways to get involved in this effort: donate a print, come to the party in Portland (or purchase from remaining prints online after the party), donate to the cause - or go on a trip!
