Website Launches
|
|
The new and improved ASMP.org is here and we have heard from a number of
members whose sentiments echoed those of Chuck Kennedy, who said "Cheers
for everyone involved!" A big thank you to the website team, chaired by Judy
Herrmann, who has championed the project since it began. Other Member comments
included, from Ken Hawkins "Ten minutes after receiving your email
announcement I found myself in need of an assistant in Seattle — I went to the new
Find An Assistant, and fifteen minutes later problem solved." Karen Hirsch said,
"Wow, what an improvement. The site is so much easier to use." J. Paul Moore
said, "I love how my new profle looks on FAP."

Phone System Gets a Tune-Up
|
|
|
ASMP's National Office has upgraded its phone system, making it easier and more
pleasant to call. You may recognize the voice talent for ASMP's message — member Blake Discher.
And, we've offcially licensed some appropriate tunes while on
hold: Paul Simon's Kodachrome, Nickelback's Photograph, The Tribute's Picture … well you get the idea.

As a result of the recent issues about terms and conditions on Facebook, and due to the many
demands on General Counsel Vic Perlman's time, ASMP has hired an outside Attorney to review
and analyze the Terms of Service on all the major networking sites. This report will help determine
which sites are not artist-friendly and will suggest possible courses of action. A podcast is planned
to share findings with ASMP members.
-
The Justice Department has confrmed that it is conducting
an anti-trust investigation into the settlement filed by groups representing authors and publishers
against Google. A deadline of September 18 has been set for the government to present its views
and a hearing has been scheduled for October 7. ASMP and other opponents of the settlement laud
the investigation as a positive sign that complaints are being heard.
-
Orphan Works legislation remains on the back burner despite a flurry of web activity and rumors
attributed to a statement by Marybeth Peters, head of the U.S. Copyright Office, that legislation is
imminent. ASMP believes that she was misquoted and, in any event, there is no suggestion of
activity in the near future.
-
The Copyright Office has published new fees for its services as of August 1st, 2009. The fee for
online registration of a basic claim will remain $35. However, other fees have been adjusted.
