ASMP General Counsel Vic Perlman attended a January 28 meeting in Washington DC with a key staff member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. When Perlman asked about orphan works legislation, he was told that it remains an important issue for the Judiciary Committee, but that they were taking a step back to see how the pending Google Books settlement might affect any legislation.

You may have heard about Pilfered Magazine. As the name suggests, it specialized in using images without a license or attribution. Under a torrent of criticism over the last week, Pilfered has taken down its issues, says it is "re-imagining our perspective" and will only solicit licensed works. If you believe this site has stolen your work, please send an email to Vic Perlman at Perlman@asmp.org

AOL has announced a new assignment platform for writers and photographers, www.seed.com, the publication agreement appears to have negative ramifications for photographers. ASMP is currently reviewing these terms of service and will have more information soon. Please let Eugene Mopsik know if you have had any experience with this publishing network.

As Chair of ASMP's Education Committee, Chris Hollo is on a mission to find the most dynamic and well-received programs created by individual Chapters. Chris and Education Committee members Burk Jackson, Stan Kaady and Margo Pinkerton are reaching out with a survey to Chapter Leaders to find great program ideas that other Chapters will be able to select from and put together for themselves. As Chris said, "We're creating a Chapter meeting cookbook and collecting recipes – our next challenge will be to put these together in a meaningful way." When completed, these ideas will be available on the website.
