  • The Authors Guild suffered a loss in its effort to stop Google from scanning millions of copyrighted books. The US District Court in New York ruled that Google's book-scanning project was a Fair Use of the material. For a recap of the case and discussion of the judge's reasoning, you can see the Reuters or CNET stories online. The Authors Guild has said that it will appeal the decision. ASMP's own lawsuit against Google is still in litigation.

  • ASMP, along with the National Press Photographers Association and others, has signed a letter to the White House protesting the limits on access currently barring photographers who cover the White House. The letter states that "The organizations and individuals signing this letter strongly believe that imposing limits on press access, as your office has done, represents a troubling precedent with a direct and adverse impact on the public's ability to independently monitor and see what its government is doing."

  • ASMP has joined with a number of other professional organizations in filing an Amici Curiae brief with the US Supreme Court in support of Petitioner Paula Petrella in the case versus Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. The issue revolves around the passage of time before a lawsuit was filed over the unauthorized making of a motion picture from a screenplay. The organizations believe that the lower court ignored the express instructions of Congress in the Copyright Act, which provides that an individual can bring a claim within three years. Oral argument is scheduled for the 21st of January. See the brief here.

The purpose was to reorganize and invigorate the local chapter, and to plan for the future. There were 25 participants in the meeting, which was a combination of brainstorming and facilitated conversation. Short term goals were established and a new Board was elected: Allen was elected President, Caleb Tkach was elected VP and Beau Blackburn stayed on as Treasurer.  Others volunteered for Board service and committees.  The meeting ended on a very positive note with a sincere desire to make the chapter work.
