Hurricane Katrina Fund issues final report

Thanks to members’ generosity, the ASMP Hurricane Katrina Fund was able to fund all of the requests it received.

Background. When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and large areas of the Gulf Coast last fall, there was considerable sentiment among the ASMP membership to provide assistance in any way that the organization could. Among other steps, such as finding sponsors to furnish in-kind donations to individuals, the ASMP National Board set up a voluntary ASMP Hurricane Katrina Fund to pay the dues for members who were devastated by the storm.

Success. The response from ASMP members was heartwarming; you gave $5,266. The fund was able to respond to all requests for dues relief that were received, disbursing a total of $4,495.

The fund stayed in operation until its scheduled expiration on January 31, 2006. After January 31, the Fund was closed. At that time, as mandated by the original Board minute that established the Fund, the remaining money ($771) was turned over to ASMP’s Legal Action Fund.

Taxes. Please note that donations to ASMP’s Hurricane Katrina Fund are not eligible for tax deductions as charitable contributions. You should consult your tax adviser to see whether they are deductible on any other basis.
