The following is an important email that was sent out to the membership of ASMP:

ASMP Members Asked to Verify Information in New Member Database.

ASMP has just rolled out its new online membership database. The benefits of the system are listed below, and we think you will find they are worthwhile. Now you have to play your part: Make sure your information is correct.

Browser Requirements

The ASMP Member Database takes advantage of modern web standards to offer its users the most productive experience possible. For you to get the most out of the database you must be using a current browser. We highly recommend Firefox (available for Windows or Mac OS X) or Safari 1.2 (available on Mac OS X 10.3).

The ASMP Member Database at minimum requires one of the following browsers, which must be set up to accept cookies and execute JavaScript:

Mac OS X
Safari, Internet Explorer 5, Firefox, Mozilla
Windows
Internet Explorer 6, Firefox, Mozilla
Mac OS 9
Mozilla 1.2.1, Internet Explorer 5

* Internet Explorer on Mac is not fully supported but will work to a certain extent.

Here’s how:

You first must set up a personal password. Go to www.asmp.org/login/ and click the “Forgot your password?” link. (Really — it’s the quickest way.) The server will email you a brand-new password, which you will use to log in to the new system for the first time.

To log in, click the Members Area link right under the ASMP logo. After you’ve entered your new password, go to the Member Identity Info page. The top of that page will say “You are currently logged in as {name}.” To view your record, just click on your name. The system will display your member profile.

You should then click on the Edit Profile button at bottom right. Your profile has 7 tabs, from Overview to Miscellaneous. As you click on each tab, you’ll see different groups of facts. If anything is wrong, fix it. After you have checked each of the tabs, be sure to click the Save Profile button!

That’s it!

Benefits. We now have a single member database for all national and chapter activities. Members can update their own address records, and can check ASMP balance and transaction history. Chapter leaders can view chapter records; and national staffers no longer have to enter changes in multiple locations. (We used to have two separate databases; keeping them synchronized was a nightmare. If your info is wrong in the new system, this may be why.)

The same database runs our Find A Photographer service, which has been made more buyer-friendly: The search-result layouts are cleaner and the results come a bit faster. The results from re-doing a search are more stable.

Your photo upload process is easier, too.

Most important, the new database will provide a strong foundation for new buyer services that we expect to offer in the future.

Some differences. Making a good foundation has required some structural changes, though. In the new design, you can have up to 3 addresses, and General members can list up to 5 metro areas. If you had more in the old system, we chose randomly.

The list of specialties has been consolidated, and General members can select up to 10 of them. You can see what we did with the old list at the Help page, www.asmp.org/admin/help/.

Problems? We are anxious to correct any mistakes and fix the bugs, and we welcome your suggestions for improvements. As always, you can email the national staff (write to webmaster@asmp.org) or phone the office at 215-451-2767.
