ASMP’s participation at the recent American Institute of Architects national convention held in Chicago on June 10th through June 12th presents a case book study on cooperation between associations and within ASMP. The opportunity to work with AIA arose from the concerns expressed by the members of ASMP/Architecture in regard to the terms and conditions for photography included in the AIA national competitions. Successful negotiations lead to an offer to participate in the convention, attended by over 25,000 AIA members.
ASMP/Architecture members, lead by David Seide and Bruce Van Inwegen, donated images for use in convention promotions, literature, and related show materials and signage. Each image was credited with the photographer’s name/ASMP. From the McCormack Center entrance, to the show registration area to the convention floor, ASMP member images were everywhere. It was impossible for an architect attendee not to be exposed to the ASMP brand. In return for the use of the images, ASMP received booth and gallery space at the convention.
The ASMP booth and gallery were continually staffed by ASMP/Architecture volunteers from around the country. The newly revised handbook, Working with an Architectural Photographer (available on-line at www.asmp.org/commerce/comm_arch.php), was distributed along with copies of the Summer ’04 ASMP Bulletin and ASMP membership information. The handbook was produced and printed through a generous grant from the ASMP Foundation. To purchase printed copies of this publication go to: ASMP Publications and scroll down the page.
ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik and ASMP/Architecture member Erica Stoller participated with other industry professionals in continuing education certified seminar on Creating Value with Architectural Photography. Although this seminar was scheduled very late in the convention, it was attended by well over 200 architects and received excellent feedback. ASMP has already been asked to participate in the next AIA convention to be held in Las Vegas in May of 2005.
This effort was the first step in opening a line of communication between architects, AIA, and photographers to address issues of mutual concern. The importance and value of this type of cooperation cannot be overstated. It was the dedication and hard work of volunteers, board members and staff that made this effort a reality. New volunteers are needed for next year’s program. If you are interested, please contact David Seide or Eugene Mopsik.
