Winter ‘08 Grant Recipients
Aperture Foundation, New York, NY — $1,500 in support of Confounding Expectations and Aperture Evenings, two components of a series of lectures and discussions presented at Aperture’s New York gallery, Parsons The New School for Design, and various cultural venues on the west coast. The series offers students, artists, professionals and the public an opportunity to engage in dialog with people who have influenced their thinking about photography.
Center, Santa Fe, NM — Review LA, a portfolio review event, provides access to influential members of the photographic community who can offer guidance for bringing work to a larger audience. The Foundation’s $1,500 grant is to help support the public component of the event, Portfolio Viewing, which is a night of photographers sharing work with picture professionals, the LA community and each other.
New Orleans Photo Alliance, New Orleans, LA — $1,500 for Toying With Creativity, a weekend workshop, hosted jointly by ASMP and NOPA, that explores image-making with a twist. At the workshop, each student gets a Holga camera and information about toy-camera techniques. The film shot on Saturday will be processed overnight, so that the successes and failures can be discussed on Sunday. The hoped-for result is an opening of new creative paths for all the participants.
PhotoAlliance, San Francisco, CA —$1,500 for the annual Our World nationally juried portfolio review event. This two-day event brings together top photography editors, publishers, curators, gallerists and educators, representing small, mid-sized and major venues around the U.S., to meet with engaged photographers to review their portfolios and encourage their careers.
Santa Fe Council for the Arts, Santa Fe, NM — $1,500 to help expand Spirit of Self, a successful youth program now in Santa Fe, to other areas of the state, including Albuquerque, Taos and Las Cruces. In a cross-cultural environment, the teens are given cameras, film and a darkroom facility and are mentored by a professional photographer for one year. During the year, the teens document their lives and give their own unique perspective of the world. In this safe forum for self-expression, they learn to cross cultural barriers and see similarities rather than differences.
