Using Photography as an Agent for Change, by David Chancellor

This event has passed. Its description is archived below.

David Chancellor Workshop

Kansas City area photographers are getting a remarkable opportunity to attend an intimate workshop with internationally-renowned documentary photographer David Chancellor, the day after his keynote presentation at the POYi opening, and before he returns to his home and work in South Africa. Seating for this workshop is very limited, so REGISTER NOW.

David Chancellor is a multi award winning documentary photographer based in South Africa. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in major galleries and museums and his work has been published worldwide. Named Nikon Photographer of the Year three times, he received a World Press Photo Award in 2010 for Elephant Story from the series Hunters. Chancellor won the Taylor Wessing National Portrait Prize in 2010, exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery London. In 2012 he received a Sony World Photography Award (Nature and Wildlife) and Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award. In 2013 he received the World Understanding Award in the Pictures of the Year International competition; the Kuala Lumpur International Photo Award for portraiture; the Vienna International Photo Award for documentary photography; and the Kontinent Award for documentary photography.

Over the course of his career, Chancellor has increasingly turned his focus onto documenting man's commodification of wildlife. In 2012 he released his first monograph Hunters (published by Schilt Publishing) in which he explores the complex relationship that exists between man and animal; the hunter and the hunted.

In 2014 he received the Environmental Vision Award from the 72nd Pictures of the Year International (POYI) for his series 'with butterflies and warriors' in which he explores community based conservation in the remote and unspoilt northern rangelands of Kenya.

The Workshop

As well as offering an opportunity to meet such a successful professional photographer, David will discuss his working process "using photography as an agent for change", which will include topics such as:

  • technical challenges, advice and solutions
  • gaining access for photo-documentary projects
  • planning and researching long term projects
  • financing your work
  • working for editorial magazines

This workshop is must-attend for serious and developing photographers, especially anyone seeking insight into international documentary photography and the creative and technical skills needed to take your practice to the next level.
