Transformations 2008

Texas-based members of ASMP were well represented during Houston FotoFest 2008, the largest and most important photography biennial in the United States. ASMP’s FotoFest exhibit was spearheaded by the Houston chapter, which solicited images from members of all three Texas chapters. The subject Transformations was one of two official FotoFest themes explored by venues throughout the city.

Environmental Portrait Gallery

In honor of longtime ASMP member Arnold Newman (1918-2006), the ASMP Bulletin asked members for their ‘environmental’ portraits, a style of portraiture that Newman pioneered. It was one of the most successful image calls we’ve ever experienced. This online gallery presents a wide selection of the images we received.

Tibet in the Eyes of 100 Photographers

Tibet fascinates everyone with its natural scenery, ancient architecture, holy mountains and lakes, unique cultures and sacred temples. Tibet is also a paradise for photographers. In the summer of 2005, China invited 48 international photographers (including 6 ASMP members) to join a like number of Chinese photographers to visit Tibet. Here are some of the photos they brought back.

The Great Bridges of New York

Photographer Dave Frieder, “the bridge man,” is preparing a coffee-table book about the steel spans that connect New York City with the rest of the world. This year, the 75th anniversary of the opening of the George Washington Bridge gives us an occasion to showcase a few of his spectacular images. Here’s Dave’s story and pictures.

The Mentor Galleries

Many of the world’s finest photographers are members of ASMP. In the Mentor Showcase, we feature interviews and insights offered by leading ASMP members whose vast experience is an invaluable resource. Here, we display images that they have selected. Just as a word, to the wise, is sufficient, so an image or two can speak volumes to those who wish to study what the masters have done.

Fine Art Gallery

Photography offers the opportunity to explore shapes, colors, patterns and shadows for sheer aesthetic enjoyment. It uses imagery drawn from the real world, but transmutes it through the artist’s eye and mind into emotion, beauty and deeper truth. In this gallery, we present a sample of the work ASMP members are doing in the fine arts.
