Referendum Question 1
Shall ASMP'S Constitution be amended to change all references from "General Member" to "Professional Member", wherever the term appears; and shall Article I, Sec. 2 and Article II, Sec.1 of ASMP's Constitution be amended to read as follows?

Article 1: GENERAL PROVISIONS
Sec. 2: The objectives of this Society are:

Current Language:

To protect and promote the interests of professional photographers whose photographs are primarily for publication.

To maintain and promote high professional standards and ethics in photography.

To cultivate friendship and mutual understanding among professional photographers.

Proposed Language:

To protect and promote the interests of professional still and motion photographers, and associated imaging professionals.

To maintain and promote high professional standards and ethics in the professional still and motion photography industry, and associated imaging fields.

To cultivate friendship and mutual understanding among professional still and motion photographers, and associated imaging professionals.

What This Means:

More and more, professional photographers are diversifying their income streams and creating hybrid business models that combine photography with motion, CGI and other related skill sets. This language will update our purpose to reflect these industry changes and the current business practices of our members.

Article 2: MEMBERSHIP

Current Language:

Sec 1: General Membership General Members shall be:

Photographers whose images are created primarily for publication.

Photographers with at least three years consecutive years of substantial professional publication experience.

Photographers for whom the majority of their earned income comes from the publication of their images.

Photographers who do not meet the above standards may apply, upon recommendation, to the national Executive Board for admission by special exception.

Proposed Language:

Sec 1: Professional Membership Professional Members shall be:

Photographers with at least three consecutive years of experience as imaging professionals.

Photographers who do not meet the above standards may apply, upon recommendation, to the national Board for admission by special exemption.

What This Means:

This requirement was originally set up as an indicator of professionalism back when the Society was The American Society of Magazine Photographers. However, many professionals today do not work primarily for publication in magazines. The word publication no longer has a clear meaning, as end uses of photography have a much broader range than in the past. Proof of professionalism in today's marketplace can be better determined through means such as client lists, images that have clearly been produced for client use, and a conversation about the applicant's experience that indicates some level of payment for photographic services provided. General Member applicants will still require 2 sponsors.

Requiring members to earn the majority of their earned income from publication of images excludes any professional working with a hybrid business model from becoming a Professional Member of this society.

Photographers who do not qualify for the Professional category will still be able to join through our other categories of membership. Photographers who wish to join as Professional Members but do not meet the qualifications will now have to petition the full Board, instead of the Executive Board. This relates to our proposal to reduce the full board size and remove the Executive Board (see Referendum Question 3).
