Survey of international members

Photography is an international language, and from its very beginnings the ASMP has counted internationally based photographers as integral members.

Country Based/For How Long: Sydney, Australia since 1959.

Nationality: New Zealand

Photographic Specialty: Architecture; fashion; environmental portraiture; photographic art; travel.

For how many years have you worked as a photographer? Since 1966.

For how many years have you been an ASMP member? Two years.

What do you consider to be the most valuable aspect of your membership in the ASMP?

ASMP membership has become absolutely essential to me since gaining a foothold in the NYC and Chicago market. I now have a larger clientele for my photographic art in NYC than I do in my base of Sydney, Australia. I have two exhibitions per year: one in Sydney, one in New York. Both virtually achieve sell-out status on opening night. I gain most clients via word of mouth but all appear to reference my Web site where the ASMP logo is displayed, thereby providing cachet or credence to my work.

What service or information could ASMP provide to you as an international member that would add value to your membership?

I currently receive all the information I require via the ASMP.

Do you participate in any of the existing ASMP specialty groups or listservs?

Not at this time.

Do you belong to other local photographic or professional associations within your local community?

I am a full member of the AIPP in Australia.

What is your primary source of news about the photography industry?

Clearly, for local (Australia) news the AIPP remains my primary source. However, due to my U.S.-based clientele the ASMP is equally valuable.

In your opinion, what is the most critical issue affecting photographers in your local community today?

Managing stock, i.e. gaining appropriate payment. Fortunately, income sourced from stock is not critical for me.

In the interest of building community and forging strategic alliances, would you be willing to share resources and knowledge of your local market with another ASMP member if they were to contact you in advance of a trip to your area?

I am happy to share local knowledge with members, however my work currently demands constant travel for me. I am now overseas nine months of every year. As I write this I am on an architectural shoot in Chicago.
