Affiliated Sites
As the world has changed, so has the scope of photography. Photographers today encompass those who create photographic imagery in creative work using still images, motion and multimedia. ASMP members represent the full scope of the profession, and whether you are a professional, a student or somewhere in between, the categories below will provide you with the right choice for membership.
Photographers actively and professionally engaged in media photography are eligible for General Membership with all of its benefits and privileges. General Members must be photographers who have three or more consecutive years of publication experience, and whose primary source of earned income (greater than 50%) is from the licensing of their photography. ASMP requires applicants to be sponsored by two ASMP General Members. General Members have full voting privileges and are listed in Find a Photographer, ASMP's searchable database on www.asmp.org. Memberships are accepted year round, and dues are pro-rated based on the calendar year.
Membership Cost: $335 and one-time Find a Photographer fee $50
Photographers who are professionals with less than three years of publication experience, part-time professionals, and non-professionals may join as Associate Members. This membership category brings many of the benefits of General Membership including access to all member information/communication, programming and events, and special offers and discounts. Memberships are accepted year round, and dues are pro-rated based on the calendar year.
Membership Cost: $225.00
Photographers who qualify for Associate membership may opt for the Associate Plus category. Associate Plus members are listed in Find A Photographer and may display one image portfolio. In all other respects, the membership benefits are the same as those of Associate Members. An applicant must be sponsored by one ASMP General Member.
Membership Cost: $300.00 and one-time Find a Photographer fee $50
Photographers just starting out can participate in a one-year Emerging Associate membership category. After a year, the Emerging Associate membership is automatically raised to an Associate Membership and dues (which are payable in January) are pro-rated based on the number of months in both categories. Emerging Associate membership benefits are the same as those of Associate members.
Membership cost: $140.00
Photographers at the college or post-secondary level are qualified for Student Associate membership. Written proof of enrollment from a department head or admissions office, or class schedule on official school letterhead is required with the application. (Photocopies of student ID cards are not accepted.) Individuals may remain Student Associates for one year after completion of a degree program and receive the same benefits as Associate members.
Membership cost: $45.00.
Individuals who are not working photographers, but serve the industry in other ways such as servicing, supplying, selling or educating photographers are eligible for Individual Affiliate membership. Benefits are the same as for an Associate Member. Memberships are accepted year round, and dues are pro-rated based on the calendar year.
Membership cost: $225.00
This is a special category of membership granted at the discretion of the National Board. Merit Memberships last for one year, after which the member may renew as a Student, Associate, Emerging Associate or General Member as appropriate. Benefits are the same as the Associate level. Membership cost: none (scholarship)
This category is open to General Members, age 65 or older, who have been General Members for at least five years and have retired from professional photography. Senior Members are non-voting members and receive the same benefits as Associates.
Membership cost: $100.00
This category is open to General Members, age 65 or older, who joined ASMP prior to 1995 and have been members continuously for at least 20 years. There is no presumption that a Life Member has retired. Life Members are considered to be General Members and receive all the benefits of General Membership.
Note that Life Membership is not automatic. As with any change of membership category, a member must apply for the change and staff in the national office must verify that all the qualifications have been met.
