PhotoPlus Expo In New York City
Thursday, October 21 through Saturday, October 23
ASMP’s booth was a busy place at PhotoPlus. Tony Gale took these pictures at the booth. Many members and aspiring photographers stopped by to meet the national staff, Board members and New York chapter leaders. We’re writing detailed synopses of selected sessions (linked below). In addition, here’s a summary of the show highlights:
Showgoers thronged to the gallery exhibit ASMP at 60 Professional Visions: Selections from the ASMP Collection at George Eastman House.
The business-plan consultations (generously donated by Kathryn Hennessey of Kate & Company, Suzanne Sease and Elaine Totten Davis) and the individual legal consultations with ASMP General Counsel Victor Perlman were fully booked, and quite a few wait-listed visitors clamored for more.
ASMP members Judy Herrmann and Mike Starke conducted a mini version of their all-day Working Digitally seminar. It was well attended (extra binders had to be brought in) and the attendees got a bracing dose of usable tips, techniques and pointers to valuable resources.
In cooperation with EP, ASMP presented a panel discussion on “Digital Issues in the Editorial Market” that was open to the public. The session was moderated by Peter Howe, with presentations by Barbara Alper, Alan Chin, Shawn G. Henry, and Brad Trent. Centered around the theme of integrating digital capture into a profitable editorial photography business, the audience and panelists debated how to price digital photos, whether the photographer truly benefits from a switch to digital, and whether a freelancer can even afford to work for the New York Times today.
Friday evening was our gala celebration at Jay Maisel’s downtown studio. The walls were lined with images, snacks and drinks were elegantly catered, and the conversations were so intense that most of us were a bit hoarse the next day. Everyone who was there joins us in saying Thanks! to Jay.
Frank Rocco took these shots at the party.
Saturday morning, we held an ASMP members-only meeting. Tony Gale snapped some photos at the meeting. Our featured speaker was Marybeth Peters, Register of Copyrights, who described the challenges that recent events and new technologies are posing for the centuries-old tradition of copyright. Later in the morning, we watched Adobe Evangelist Julieanne Kost demonstrate some neat productivity features in Photoshop CS.
In all, it was a great event. Many an attendee and exhibitor (including all of us) went home exhausted but delighted with how well it all turned out.
